Untitled(short people)
This work is extended from MATERAIL from 2012 and 8breaths from 2013. Constructed with balloons, this work begins with an act of blowing up balloons and ends with collecting the individual’s breath. Balloon works titled MATERAIL was done with participation of Gimhongsok’s family. Gimhongsok distributed balloons and proposed the family to blow up the balloons as much as possible. During this act of blowing up, Gimhongsok asked the family to think about one wish and put that into the balloon. The nouns of the wish Gimhongsok’s family put into the balloons were translated into English as mother, achievement, travel, everyday wonders, rightness, interest, attraction, and love. Gimhongsok then made a title of the work with the first letter of each word. This balloon works were portrait of Gimhongsok’s family, and at the same time memory of the breath. Hence the artist metaphorizes a person’s breath into two different meaning: life and wish. Then they were shaped into balloons.
A series of 15breaths is with balloons stacked vertically with 15 balloons of which 15 factory workers had blown up. Factory workers who contributed to this project were from the bronze factory where the work was produced.
Subtitle Short people from Untitled (Short People) are Gimhongsok’s acquaintances. These people are grouped with 4 to 6 normal people: friends from elementary school, high school, college, childhood friends, relatives, colleagues from college, and students. Shaped by breath of these people, the work was done with the participation of about 100 people.

MATERAIL이라는 제목의 풍선작품은 김홍석의 가족이 참여하여 완성한 것이다. 작가는 그의 가족에게 풍선을 나누어 주고 풍선에 바람을 가득히 불어 줄 것을 제안했으며 이때 하나의 소망을 떠올리며 그 소망을 풍선 속에 담아줄 것을 당부했다. 그들이 풍선을 불면서 기원하고 소망했던 단어들은 어머니(mother), 성취(achievement), 여행(travel), 일상의 기적(everyday wonders), 정의(rightness), 재미(interest), 매력(attraction) 그리고 사랑(love)이었다. 작가는 이 단어들을 영어로 전환한 후 영문의 머리 글자를 따서 작품의 제목으로 정했다. 이 풍선작품은 그의 가족의 초상이며, 숨의 기억이다.
이와 같이 작가는 사람의 숨을 생명과 소망이라는 두 가지 뜻으로 은유화한 후 이를 풍선으로 형태화 하였다. 15 breaths란 작품은 15명의 공장 노동자가 자신들의 숨을 불어 넣은 풍선을 세로로 쌓아 올린 작품이다. 여기서 공장 노동자란 김홍석의 풍선 작품을 제작한 브론즈 공장 직원들을 말한다.
작품 Untitled(short people)에서의 부제 short people은 김홍석의 지인들을 말한다. 이들은 4~6명의 소집단으로 이루어진 보통 사람들이다. 이들은 김홍석의 초등학교 친구들, 고등학교 친구들, 대학 친구들, 어릴 때 친구들, 친척들, 대학 동료들, 그의 학생들이다. 이들의 숨에 의해 형태화된 이 작품은 총 백 사람의 참여로 이루어 진 것이다.
