Subsidiary Construction
- On the Ethical Politics of Material
This project since 2008 is about political attitude and ethical politics of art occurred by materials and forms of art.
One day Gimhongsok has stared at a state of his wrapped artworks and realized that it is another subjective object as like the unwrapped ones. Objects we encounter can be equal in value or meaning as existence, but all objects are decided and judged by political and social nature as like artwork is the subject in an art exhibition. In both cases of the implicit politics of materials, such as stone, metal, wood, and canvas as artistic materials chosen by artists traditionally and the politics of manner which appear in everyday objects chosen by contemporary artists, all boundaries indicate the explicit subjective object. Gimhongsok made peripheral materials as subject to reserve this hierarchical situation, i. e. the dualistic confrontational situation of subject and periphery.
Objects which subsidize subjective objects such as plastic bags of shopping goods, cardboard box which contains products, expanded polystyrene installed behind the office walls, or wrapping materials to protect artwork become to be located the main subject of Gimhongsok’s artwork. Plastic bags, PVC fabric, lumber, plywood, expanded polystyrene foam, so-called subsidiary materials expand to Gimhongsok’s sculpture through form, structure, arrangement.
“Trash bags which can be seen commonly on the street are mostly the result of cooperation by the multitudes. The form of existence and the meaning of a trash bag thrown away by someone can be changed by a pedestrian who was walking by. For example, when a pedestrian crumples a bottle of beverage in a trash bag on the street or when another trash bag is put on the top of a trash bag thrown on the street, the form generates abundant fables. This kind of cooperation is spontaneous because a certain consensus was not premised among the cooperators. This kind of spontaneous result, however, can be true social consensus.”
