The Park of Atonement

There are certain people in the world who long for rainstorms because none exist.

This is not because of particular geographical circumstances, but rather because conditions created by social and capital systems in some regions have lead to the gradual disappearance of rainstorms.

Although the disappearance of rainstorms is a natural phenomenon, it tends to happen more quickly in places marked by severe and artificially wrought histories. This notion of an artificial history refers to the conflict between the means of subsistence and class that spread as a result of capitalism, a history that operates as a natural, unconscious flow of energy in the minds of the members of society.

Thus the places that have been affected by this mindset have such a plenitude of material objects and institutions so as to have negatively affected peoples’ emotional states, and it is at that moment that people begin to long for their difficult pasts.

This kind of process that resembles the cyclical path of a crisis after revolution, and once again the return to a revolution is made possible largely through the reliance on myths.

Myth here refers to the circular form redistributed to describe present-day capitalism while the rainstorm refers to a cyclical structure that must prevail no matter the circumstances. In this case, the myth refers to the circular form that has been transposed onto capitalism, while the rainstorm refers to the cyclical structure of the belief in the necessity for rainstorms to reoccur, no matter what.

Here, there is a need for a space for people who once more long for rainstorms.

Anyone can create this space, since it is intended for one person and does not require much room, and since it only needs enough energy to make the pump work properly.

Even though the rainstorm created in the space is not real, it is possible that one might start to cry while standing alone under the rain or, depending on the water pressure, might even start to believe that one’s sins can be washed away.

It is highly likely that people that live in a country with a per capita income of at least $25,000 will have the greatest need for this park. For example, this means that with the figure $25,000 income per capita, at least two-thirds of the community will be made up of people with a strict, law-abiding mentality, while at least two-thirds will be made up of those who help the poor.

It is believed that the installation of the space in countries where the GDI is less than $1,000 can also be helpful in other ways.

Triumph Plaza

This plaza can only be constructed in a place where two-thirds of the community feel satisfied with themselves, because triumph depends upon personal triumphs.

It is dangerous to think that such personal triumph is the same thing as narcissism or egotism. This is because what personal satisfaction really means is that one is willing to sacrifice his or herself because he or she steadfastly believes in collective progress, or that collective faith can transform society as a whole. One could say that triumph begins when the nation has succeeded in programming people to believe that personal satisfaction is just a natural outcome of the history of progress.

A vacant lot of roughly 100,000 square meters is needed to construct this space.

After demarcating five points in the middle of the plaza, the person chooses a starting point and moves to the other demarcated points, forming a star shape with their movements.

One’s path will be marked out on the ground by trailing behind a prepared liquid solution.

The best liquid to use is an epoxy-based paint for its durability, and although any colors can be used, red and blue are recommended.

The pace of walking does not matter. However, walking rapidly will create a more conducive emotional state.

After walking around the five points, one should stop for the necessary amount of time needed to let the paint to dry.

Because an extremely embarrassing situation could occur if someone stepped over the paint path before it has dried, no one should be allowed to mill about needlessly.

After the paint has dried, repeat the actions.

Although a single person can do it, it would be better if more people undertook this action so that a diversity of star shapes could be made.

The plaza will be completed after this action has been repeated roughly 10,800 times.

When the plaza is finished, our past will have been glorified and we will sing of the bright future and gain in self-confidence.

Liberation Square

It does not really make any sense to form a square with a name Liberation through mutual consent of the civic minds but it is also a fact that these squares actually do exist in several countries.

It would be best to use caution and make sure that the square does not reflect on history in any way, or if it does, to use the viewpoint of a foreigner as its basis; to make sure that the square does not establish any clear political intentions; and to build such a spot in a location (country) where two-thirds of the population feel that they are sufficiently liberated.

First, a flat space of good quality surrounded by high buildings is needed.

People who feel that their past is always coming back to haunt them; those who mix up the future and the present by pushing present problems into the future; those who are anxious that the future will not be as glorious as the past; such people are to climb to the top of the building.

When they reach the top of the building, they are to grab a hold of paint-filled balloons.

The paint color is to be unified by red. It is best to stick to one color from the beginning, since a ridiculous effect might be achieved instead if the colors are not uniform.

When the top has been reached, look down and throw the balloons down while aiming at a particular spot.

As the balloons burst and color the ground below, those who felt anxious will feel calm, while those who are mischievous will fall silent, and those who are skeptical will burst into laughter, and as those who were filled with happiness instead permeate the air with their worries, everything will become equalized.

If others who do not feel the emotions listed above linger about the space, a dispute will then ensue.

Solitude Tower

Solitude begins at the discovery of a path leading to the encountering of others.

Solitude begins when wounds or vacillations that can’t be put into words arise, whether from a separation or a violent scene, or the sudden arrival of a monotonous moment.

In general, people consider solitude as something that lies with an individual’s pain, which arises after estrangement from another person. But the truth is that solitude comes because one allows oneself to be open and vulnerable enough to others and thus willing to empathize with their pain.

Therefore, a tower where one can meet others and truly contemplate solitude is proposed.

Although this tower should be built deep in the isolated mountains,

it can be installed within a city to allow for greater human access.

Single capacity elevators are to be constructed in a building with five floors underground and 15 stories above ground.

The stories above ground are to be built of glass to allow for a full view, while the underground levels are to be made of concrete.

The elevators are to be built so that there is no space for seating implements like a chair or sofa. This is because it is a space that aims to change the mentality rather than being a place for physical rest.

This tower is not intended for tourism, nor is it moreover a space for religious contemplation, but there are certain stipulations that may apply to individuals using it.

Although it is most suited for those who have a fear of confronting others or those who become bored with unfamiliar situations, it is not likely that these kinds of people will seek out this place.

Operating the elevator without any occupants could also work as a symbol of solitude as well.

Meeting Plaza

This Meeting Plaza is intended as a social space for those who have a fear of meeting other people or have a pessimistic view when it comes to meeting others.

Since a small budget is required for this plaza, the project first requires receiving the consent of the local community.

First, an old building that is on the verge of collapse is bought, following an agreement with local residents. A company should be called in to demolish the building, as is the norm for the other old buildings that have expired in the city.

The rubble from the building is to be left behind following the demolition, save such dangerous parts as exposed pipes, broken glass and sharp pieces of concrete, which are to be removed or crushed up.

After the sharp pieces have been discarded, all of the holes and openings that are large enough to catch peoples’ legs are to be patched up with concrete.

The plaza is complete once all of the holes have been plugged in and only the rubble and concrete-covered parts of the building remain.

Although the building might resemble a large-scale sculpture, it can also have the feeling of a hill for those pedestrians who have climbed up to the highest parts. One can naturally strike up a conversation as others adjust their postures to regain their balance, by saying that the reason one has to strike this awkward posture is because of the way the plaza is shaped, thus using it as an excuse to start up a dialogue.

A sense of release can be attained from the sheer force of having to encounter another person face-to-face, while a genuine meeting can finally take place through the other person’s speech, gestures, and concerns.

As something that is not often seen in daily life, this awkward posture adopted by people in the plaza can also create a new kind of scenery for those overlooking the space.

This kind of plaza is not recommended for locations that have been deeply affected by hurtful memories of war, acts of terrorism, earthquakes or other disasters. It would be best not to build the plaza in such affected locales in the first place, especially since the name would have to be changed. This is because these kinds of wounds do not disappear but remain trapped within the memory in different ways.

The Tower of Ethics

In order to build the Tower of Ethics, a poignant agreement with all of society must first be reached.

There is the strong likelihood that this tower will be built in a place overflowing with strong social bonds because if a large-scale societal agreement on its placement can be reached, it has to be a country that at least has a progressive notion about human rights.

It is highly unlikely that this tower will be built in a place (country) where religion has a strong influence, where beliefs operate much more strongly than ethical conduct, or in a place (country) where charity is well developed and half the population is made up of the sorts of people who donate money to needy children in poor countries.

Instead of just taking the form of a sculpture, people can enter the tower and climb to the top. However, not just anyone can enter, for exacting conditions must first be met.

The kinds of people to whom these criteria might apply include:

Bums living on the outskirts who have only seen poverty since the day they were born and live a day-to-day existence looking for food; bankrupted drifters who are driven only by their despair; the city poor who envy the fulfilling lives of pigeons in comparison to their own; artists who are numbed by the overwhelming amount of time on their hands; the stigmatized elders who make up the daily lines to the soup kitchens; teenagers who live apart from their families in order to make a living; foreigners who came to this place with hopes and instead have nothing to cling to but that hope and a desire to return home; drug addicts who have become so antisocial that it has been a year since they have conversed with anyone.

Thus, people who have been financially ruined or rejected from society and who figure that there is nothing else to do but climb to the top of the tower can inquire at the front desk located at the entrance, and submit information regarding their social status and financial matters.

Those who successfully pass through the procedure will receive 30,000 won ($30) as an initial payment, on the strictly enforced condition that they stand for one hour when they reach the top of the tower.

While the image of a person showing his or her body to others in a public place because of impoverished circumstances might strike those living in the area as being too cruel and frightening, there is the strong likelihood that tourists and strangers will rush in to snap pictures, with the thought that it is a kind of living sculpture or there is at least something worth shooting.

As the tower is subject to a changing influx of people, from those who come because they have no money to those who come in order to make money, the tower will be subject to different personalities and rights, as it becomes the site of tears and frustration, anger and bitter struggles.

If this tower is built, people who have goodwill toward mankind will work toward making social institutions that help the poor; those who are smart and of good social standing will try to solve the problems through economic policy; the kind-hearted will feel troubled and pray; and idiots will be happy just to be alive. In any case, this tower will make most people think about the human condition in some way.

Even if this tower could never exist, the kinds of people who would be willing to climb it always will.

The Path of Glory

There will always be those who wait impatiently for their moment of glory or who thrill in the light of past achievements.

Attitude becomes important in the case of glory,

and the way this usually happens is that it turns into a purity through abstract thoughts, or in the case of reaching a goal for collective profit, it shows up as a myth that contains one’s self-destructive energy. This can present an extremely frightening picture to those looking on from the outside, or depending on the circumstances, can also come off as looking ridiculous.

This is because there are many cases where glory is nothing but the dazzling illusions of past and present, or because people believe that the only path to glory is making a commitment to progress and striving for endless improvement.

Nevertheless, presented here is—to jumble metaphors somewhat—a path to glory.

After selecting a straight street in an abandoned part of the city, the pathway and the buildings surrounding it are painted white to create the fascinating effect of a floating space.

Flood lights that are bright enough to illuminate a stadium are mounted onto the surrounding buildings. The lights should be placed roughly six meters high and placed 50 centimeters apart.

The lights should be able to illuminate a distance of 10 square meters and use 10,000 watts, which means that for a 10 meter walkway, there should be 1,000-watt light bulbs installed on the buildings to cover every 1-meter interval of street.

Although this expends a considerable amount of electricity, no great difficulty is foreseen in receiving the consent of those living in the place (country), since it is for the attainment of great glory.

Even if it is installed in a rich place (country), the lights should be turned off for roughly an hour after the sun sets at least once a week. Not only will this help save energy, but it will also be the correct way to achieve a more dramatic effect.

When this place is complete, the cityscape filled with life will be discarded and the thought that everyday life is no longer accessible will itself become an everyday notion, thus refracting into a dialectic point of view.

As these pedestrians create the effect of a dazzling illusion of a museum or exhibition space by their unique marching parade and grandiloquent memorial, they will be given a sense of hope for glory each time they pass each other in surreal, dreamlike meeting on the dazzling walkway.

Peace Plaza

If peace refers to the absence of conflict or antagonism, then an easiness that will blunt the edges of the ideal known as progress will first have to be proffered.

Although ever more specialized, perfect systems are created because of the commonly accepted idea that communities cannot be managed through the emotions alone, there is always a compulsion toward feeling disappointment or anger, even if the system is a certified one. The place can be considered a pretty democratic and progressive society if it is at least willing to make gestures toward not completely ignoring such things.

One cannot simply say that getting rid of the sources of conflict, such as religion, ideology, race, territory and other problems that are as major as the history of mankind, will automatically result in peacefulness. This is because just when the elimination has been declared total and absolute, someone in some corner will start to cry.

It is possible that paying close attention to something trifling and insignificant will be more warmly received by people than a large-scale pacification (compromise) over a major issue.

It must be clearly shown that the visual or spatial elements of the Peace Plaza were not created with the aim of gaining political profit from the visitors to the plaza. To offset this (or to put it more precisely, to disturb this traditional notion), benches and about one sculptural work of art should be placed in a large, unoccupied lot.

Although it is important to emphasize that there is not much there, the sculpture has to be there because in the case of public works, the city has to have some kind of visible proof that its money was spent for the benefit of the local citizens.

However, it is possible that just having an empty space to connote a sense of peacefulness may be too difficult to grasp for ordinary people.

In order to ameliorate this possible situation,

the surface of the benches and sculpture should change temperature according to the season, with the help of an exacting and precise science.

In other words, a device that will cool or heat the bottom of the plaza depending on the season should be installed. So in the summer as the floor of the plaza as well as the benches and sculptures are cooled, people will come to relax and lie down on the ground, while in the winter waiting for friends in the cold will no longer be so bothersome because the sculpture and objects are very warm.

Additionally, it can serve as a perfect sleeping spot for homeless people, since they are hard to come by in the city.

If, despite the fact that this plaza is built, a fight breaks out over finding space, people will begin to think that that peace is no longer viable, and a social agreement will be reached, that the only way people can find peace is through living with their own ideals.

속죄의 공원

세상에는 비바람이 없어 비바람을 그리워하는 이들이 존재한다.

이렇게 이상한 일이 어떤 특정 지역에만 적용되는 것이 아니라 사회적 의지와 자본에 대한 열망의 정도에 따라 비바람이 사라지는 곳이 있기 마련이다.

비바람이 사라진다는 것은 자연스러운 발생이지만 매우 인위적이고 혹독한 역사를 전개한 곳일수록 빠르게 생겨난다.

혹독한 역사란 생존과 계급간의 투쟁을 전개한 자본주의가 사회 구성원의 인식에 시냇물처럼 자연스럽게 작용하는 에너지를 말한다.

이러한 과정을 겪은 곳은 현재 물질과 제도의 넉넉함이 그들의 정서에 오히려 해악을 가할 지경까지 온 경우를 말하며, 이때 그들은 자신들의 혹독한 과거를 그리워하기 시작한다.

혁신 이후에 몰락이, 몰락 이후에 혁신이 발생하는 것과 같은 이러한 순환 구조는 다분히 신화에 대한 의존으로 인해 가능하다.

여기서 신화란 현대 자본주의와 재배치된 원형을 말하며 이때 비바람은 어떻게든 다시 발생되어야 하는 순환구조를 말한다.

여기, 비바람을 그리워하는 이들에게 필요한 공간이 있다.

일인용 공간이기 때문에 넓은 면적이 요구되는 것이 아니며, 펌프를 작동시킬 전기 시설만 있다면 누구도 이러한 공간을 만들어 낼 수 있다.

이 공간의 비바람은 비록 진짜는 아니지만, 혼자서 비를 맞다 보면 괜히 눈물이 흐를 수도 있고 정도가 심해지면 자신의 원죄를 씻을 수 있다는 생각이 들기도 한다.

국민소득 이만 오천불 이상의 국가에 사는 사람들은 이 공원이 필요할 가능성이 매우 크다. 예컨대 1인당 국민소득이 이만 오천불 이상이란 지표는 준법정신이 투철한 이들이 구성원의 삼분의 이를 넘고, 불쌍한 사람들을 보면 돕고자 하는 마음을 갖는 이가 삼분의 이정도가 됨을 의미한다.

국민소득 천불 미만의 국가에 설치하는 것도 다른 면에서 많은 도움이 되리라 판단된다.

승리의 광장

승리란 자기만족이기 때문에 이 광장을 설치하기 위해서는 공동체의 삼분의 이가 자기만족에 빠진 곳에서만 가능하다.

자칫 자기만족을 부정적 나르시즘이나 에고이즘으로 생각해서는 위험하다. 개인을 희생하면서까지 공동의 진보에 동의하거나 공동의 신념이 사회를 개혁할 수 있다고 믿는 태도가 자기만족이기 때문이다. 진보의 역사는 이렇게 쓰여 졌기 때문에 이러한 자기만족적 역사기술과 이에 대한 국가의 대응에 대해서 자연스럽게 수용하는 것이 승리의 시작점이라고 할 수 있다.

이 광장을 조성하기 위해서는 약 삼만 평 정도의 공터가 요구된다.

광장의 중앙에 다섯 개의 꼭지점을 임의로 정한 후,

별을 생각하며 자신이 정한 시작점에서 다른 꼭지점으로 이동한다.

이동 시, 준비한 액체를 바닥에 흘리면서 걷는다.

액체의 종류는 내구성이 좋은 에폭시 계열의 페인트가 적당하며

색상은 어느 것이어도 좋지만 빨간색이나 파란색을 권한다.

걷는 속도는 중요치 않다. 그러나

비장한 마음을 갖기 위해 되도록이면 빠르게 걷는 것이 좋다.

다섯 꼭지점을 한 번 걷고 나면 이 행위를 멈춰야 하는데 이것은 페인트의 건조 시간이란 제약 때문이다.

이때 페인트가 마르지 않은 상태에서 누군가 그 위를 걷게 되면 실로 당황스러운 결과가 발생하니 아무도 얼씬거리게 해서는 안 된다.

페인트가 대충 마른다 싶었을 때 똑같은 행위를 다시 한다.

한 사람이 해도 되지만, 여러 사람이 참여하는 것이 다양한 별 모양을 위해 좋다.

이러한 행위를 통틀어 약 만 팔백 번 정도하고 나면 이 광장은 완성된다.

이 광장이 완성되면 우리의 과거는 영광으로 바뀌고 미래에 대해 노래를 부르며 모두가 자신감을 갖게 된다.

자유의 광장

자유라는 이름을 가진 광장을 조성한다는 것은 아무리 생각해도 무엇을 위한 것인지 알 수는 없지만 이러한 명칭을 가진 광장은 여러 나라에 이미 존재한다.

여기 제시하는 광장은 역사를 반영치 않도록 조심하거나, 굳이 반영케 한다면 이방인의 서술을 토대로 하고, 정치적 의도가 명확히 보이지 않도록 노력하고, 충분히 자유롭다고 느끼는 구성원이 삼분의 이가 넘는 지역(국가)에 조성하는 것이 적당하다.

먼저, 고층빌딩에 둘러싸인 질 좋고 평평한 바닥을 가진 공터가 요구된다.

과거가 자신을 여전히 공격하고 있다고 느껴지거나, 미래와 현재를 뒤범벅 시켜 현재의 문제를 자주 뒤로 미루거나, 과거처럼 미래가 영광스럽게 진행되지 않을 것이란 불안을 가진 이들은 근처의 아무 빌딩을 선택하여 그 꼭대기에 오른다.

건물 꼭대기에 오를 때 페인트가 담긴 풍선을 소지한다.

페인트의 색상은 빨간색으로 통일한다. 색을 통일하지 않을 경우 자칫 우스꽝스러운 결과가 나올 수 있기 때문에 애초에 한 가지 색으로 정하는 것이 좋다.

꼭대기에 다다르면 아래를 내려다보고

적당한 지점을 겨냥하고 공터 아래로 준비한 풍선을 던진다.

풍선이 터지고 바닥에 얼룩이 생기면,

불안했던 이들은 평온해지고, 장난스런 사람들은 숙연해 지며, 의심이 많은 이들은 웃음이나며, 행복감이 충만했던 이들은 반대로 현재의 환경에 의심을 품게 되어 평등해 질 수 있다.

위에 열거한 내용 이외의 감정을 가진 이들이 이 근처에 얼씬거리면 다툼이 발생한다.

고독의 탑

고독의 시작은 타인을 만날 수 있는 통로의 발견이다.

이별이나 폭력적 장면, 갑작스럽게 찾아온 시간의 단조로움에 대한 의식, 이처럼 말로는 표현할 수 없는 상처나 망설임이 나타날 때 고독은 시작된다.

일반적으로 고독은 개인의 고통이자 타인으로부터의 소외로 생각하지만 진정한 의미의 주체는 타인에 대해 열려 있고 타인을 위해 고통 받을 수 있음을 수용한다면 지독한 고독은 타인의 고통에 대한 이해로 연결된다.

여기, 타인을 만나기 위한 그리고 진정한 고독에 대해 사색할 수 있는 탑을 제시한다.

이 탑은 반드시 인적이 없는 산속에 설치되어야 하지만

사람들의 접근을 위해 도시 한 복판에 설치하는 것도 좋다.

지하 오층 깊이, 지상 십 오층 높이의 타워를 세우고 내부에 일인용 엘리베이터를 설치한다.

지상 층은 밖을 내다볼 수 있도록 사면을 유리로 처리하고 지하는 콘크리트로 마감한다.

엘리베이터 내부는 적당히 넓지만 의자나 소파 등의 앉을 만한 거리는 놓아두지 않는다.

왜냐하면 이 탑은 육체적 휴식보다는 사고의 변화를 요구하는 공간이기 때문이다.

이 탑은 관광용이 아니며, 더욱이 종교적 사색을 위한 것도 아니지만,

누구에게나 오를 수 있는 자격은 있다.

얼굴을 맞대는 일에 공포가 있거나 낯설음에 지친 이들이 사용하는 것이 적당하겠지만 대부분 이런 이들이 이 장소를 방문하여 이용할 가능성은 오히려 적다.

아무도 사용하지 않지만 엘리베이터만 홀로 운행시키는 것도 고독의 의미를 전달하는데 상징적으로는 적당할 수 있다.

만남의 광장

타인과의 만남에 두려움이 있는 이들과 타인과의 만남에 비관적 시각을 가진 이들에게 필요한 사회적 공간이 여기에 있다.

이 광장을 조성하기 위해서는 적은 예산이 예상되나 그 지역 공동체의 합의가 우선 되어야 한다.

먼저, 이미 너무 오래되어 수명이 다한 5층 이상의 건물을 그 지역민의 동의를 얻어 구매한다. 오래된 건물은 도시의 건물들이 의례 그렇게 죽어 갔듯이 전문 업체의 도움을 통해 폭파시킨다.

폭파된 잔해를 그대로 놔두고 단지 위험한 부분들 즉, 튀어 나온 파이프, 깨진 유리, 날카로운 콘크리트 모서리들만 제거하거나 마모시킨다.

뾰족한 부분들이 제거되면, 사람들의 다리가 빠질 만한 구멍들을 콘크리트로 다시 메워 나간다.

빈 부분이 다 메워지면 폭파된 건물의 잔해는 하나의 덩어리로 남게 되고 이 광장은 완성된다.

완성된 광장은 자칫 커다란 조형물로 보이기도 하지만, 광장 위를 비스듬한 자세로 지나다니는 보행자들로 인해 언덕 정도로만 보일 수도 있다. 경사로 인해 중심을 잡기 위한 자세들은 타인을 만날 때 자신의 자세가 이러한 광장의 형태로부터 발생된 것이라고 핑계를 댈 수 있으며, 이러한 핑계로부터 대화는 자연스럽게 시작될 수 있다.

이러한 자연스러움은 얼굴을 서로 맞대어 상대를 파악하려는 폭력으로부터 해방될 수 있으며 오히려 얼굴 맞대기가 아닌 상대의 말투, 몸짓 그리고 배려를 통해 진정한 만남이 발생된다.

이런 어정쩡한 자세는 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 자세이자 장면이어서 광장 밖에서 바라보는 사람들에게 새로운 풍경을 제공하는 이점도 있다.

이 광장은 전쟁과 테러 그리고 지진등과 같은 재해로부터 아픈 기억을 가진 지역에는 권하지 않는다. 그럴 경우 이 광장의 이름이 바뀌어야 하나, 무엇 보다 애초에 조성이 돼서는 안될 것으로 생각된다. 아픈 상처는 기억 속에서 다르게 진화될 뿐 사라지지는 않기 때문이다.

윤리의 탑

윤리의 탑을 세우기 위해서는 절실한 사회적 합의가 전제되어야 한다.

이 탑을 공공장소에 건립하는데 사회적 합의가 성공적으로 이루어 진 곳이라면 적어도 인권에 대해 매우 진보적이어서 사회적 우화가 넘실거리는 곳일 확률이 높다.

종교가 그 지역(국가)에 지대한 영향을 끼치는 곳이라던가, 신념이 윤리보다 훨씬 더 강하게 작용을 하는 곳이라던가, 기부 산업이 발달하여 후진국의 어린이를 돕는 이가 지역(국가)의 절반을 넘는 곳이라면 이 탑이 건립될 경우가 희박하다.

이 탑은 단순한 조각물로써 존재하는 것이 아니라 보행자들은 탑으로 입장하여 꼭대기에 오를 수 있다. 그러나 아무나 오를 수 있는 것이 아니라, 탑에 오르기 위한 가혹한 조건에 충족 돼야 한다.

이러한 조건에 적당하다고 생각되는 이들이란,

출생과 동시에 호흡마저 가난하여 평생 먹을거리만 찾아 다닌 변두리 거지들, 파산하여 절망을 목표로 살아가는 부랑자들, 자신에 비해 매우 넉넉해 보이는 비둘기들을 미워하는 도시 빈민자들, 멍하니 있는 시간이 너무 넘쳐나는 예술가들, 하루 중 구제센터에서 줄 서기가 유일한 낙인 노인들, 생계를 위해 가족과 이별하여 홀로 살아가는 청소년들, 희망을 안고 그 지역을 찾아 왔으나 이제는 자신의 고국에 돌아갈 희망만을 안고 사는 외국인들, 말수가 극단적으로 적어져 남과 대화한지 일년 이상 된 마약 중독자들을 말한다.

이렇게 재정적으로 궁핍하거나, 사회에서 박탈되어 이 탑이라도 오르고자 하는 사람들은 이 탑 입구에 있는 데스크를 방문하여, 자신의 신분과 재정 상태를 확인하는 절차를 받는다.

이 절차에 합격된 이들은 이 탑을 오르는 대가로 1회, 한화 삼만원(미화 삼십 달러)을 지급 받는다. 이때 정상에 올라 한 시간을 서 있어야 하는 조건이 입장객에게 강제적으로 부여된다.

공공장소에서 가난으로 인해 자신의 외형을 다른 이들에게 공개하는 장면은, 이 지역에 거주하는 이들에겐 너무도 잔인하고 무섭게 느껴질 수 있으나, 관광객이나 이방인의 경우는 살아 있는 조각쯤으로 생각되어 사진기를 들이 댈 확률이 높다.

돈이 없다는 이유와 돈을 얻을 수 있다는 이유로 이 탑을 오르는 사람들의 인격과 인권이 조정 당하는 이 탑은 눈물과 좌절, 분노와 저항이 존재하게 된다.

이 탑이 건립 되면,

정의가 많은 이들은 약자를 위한 사회 제도가 조정되도록 노력할 것이고, 똑똑하고 사회적 지위가 있는 이들은 경제 정책의 문제점을 찾을 것이며, 착한 이들은 불평을 하며 기도할 것이고, 못난 이들은 아무 생각이 없이 자신의 삶에 고마워 할 것이고, 대부분의 사람들은 이를 통해 인간의 조건에 대해 생각할 것이다.

이 탑이 건립될 수 없다 하더라도

이 탑에 오르려는 사람들은 여전히 존재할 것이다.

영광의 길

영광이 오기를 고대하거나 과거의 영광의 빛에 전율을 느끼는 이들은 어디에서도 항상 존재한다.

영광은 이를 맞는 이들의 태도가 중요한데,

추상적인 관념으로서 순수함으로 빠지거나 공동의 이익을 위한 목적일 경우 자기 파괴적인 에너지를 가진 신화로써 작용하게 된다. 이 경우 외곽에서 바라보는 이들에겐 이 모습이 매우 무섭게 느껴지기도 하고 경우에 따라서는 우스꽝스러울 수도 있다.

왜냐하면 영광이란 과거와 현재의 현혹적인 환상일 경우가 많기 때문이기도 하고 지속적인 진보에 대한 약속과 끝없는 개선만이 영광을 찾는 길이라고 믿기 때문이다.

그럼에도 불구하고

여기 은유의 의미로 범벅 된 영광의 길을 제시한다.

도시의 버려진 지역의 일직선의 거리를 선택한 후 길바닥과 주변 건물을 모두 흰색으로 도색 하여 아주 신비로울 만한 부유의 공간을 연출한다.

건물 외벽에 스타디움에서 볼만한 매우 강력한 조명기들을 설치한다. 조명기는 바닥에서 육 미터 정도의 높이로 정하고 조명간의 간격은 오십 센티 정도로 한다.

조명의 광량은 십평방미터에 10,000와트를 기준으로 하여야 하며, 이는 10미터 폭의 거리에 1미터 간격의 건물 외벽마다 1,000와트 조명을 다섯 개씩 설치해야 함을 의미한다.

굉장한 양의 전력이 요구되지만 영광을 맞이하기 위해서 그 지역(국가)의 동의를 얻는데 어려움이 없을 가능성이 크다.

아무리 잘 사는 지역(국가)이라고 해도 1일 1회 해가 다 지고 난 뒤 약 한 시간 후쯤 조명들을 작동시킬 것을 권한다. 이는 엄청난 전력의 소모를 줄일 수 있고, 보다 극적인 효과를 얻는데 바람직하기 때문이다.

이 거리가 완성이 되면 삶으로 이루어진 도시 풍경은 제거되고, 일상은 범접할 수 없는 의미로, 범접할 수 없는 의미는 일상으로 지각되는 변증법적 시각이 발생한다.

이는 지치지 않고 벌어지는 진기한 거리 행진과 과장스런 기념물, 전시회와 박물관과 같은 현혹적인 환상과 동일한 효과를 얻게 해주며, 눈부신 거리에서 만나는 보행자들 간의 얼굴 맞대기는 비현실적이고 몽환적인 환경과 함께 영광을 맞이 할 희망을 제공한다.

평화의 광장

평화란 다툼과 반목이 없는 것을 말한다면, 이를 실현하기 위해서는 적어도 진보라는 이성의 각을 무디게 하는 편안함을 제시해야 한다.

공동체는 감성에 의해 운영될 수 없다는 생각으로 인해 보다 전문적이고 완벽에 가까울 만한 시스템을 제시하곤 하는데, 검증된 시스템이라고 해도 항상 이에 대해 불만스럽거나 화가 치미는 무리들이 발생한다. 이들을 무시하지 않으려는 제스처만 보여도 꽤나 민주적이고 진보된 사회라고 생각할 수 있다.

종교, 이념, 인종, 영토 등과 같이 인류의 역사만큼이나 커다란 문제로 인한 반목을 제거하는 것만이 평화스럽다고 할 수는 없다. 제거했다고 판단하는 순간 어느 구석에서 누군가 울기 시작하기 때문이다.

사소함에 대한 세심한 관심과 배려는 적어도 거대한 이슈에 대한 웅장한 조정(타협)보다도 개인에게 평화스러운 마음을 발생시키는데 훨씬 관대할 수 있다.

평화의 광장은 공간적으로나 시각적으로나 보행자에게 어떠한 정치적 이익이나 조건 없이 조성되었다는 것을 명확히 드러내야 한다. 이를 상쇄시키기 위해(정확히는 교란시키기 위해) 널따란 공터에 벤치들과 하나의 예술품 정도만 설치해야 한다.

아무것도 없다는 것을 강조해야 하지만 예술품(조각물) 하나 정도가 있어야 하는 이유는 공적 사업에서 지역민을 위해 시에서 어느 정도 자금을 사용했다는 증거로써 필요하기 때문이다.

그러나 단순히 텅 비었다는 것만 강조하는 것은 평화의 의미를 전달하는데 보통사람들에겐 이해하기 쉽지 않은 주제로서 작용할 수 있다.

이를 개선하기 위해,

매우 정교하고 예민한 과학의 도움으로 벤치들과 조각물은 계절에 따라 그 표면의 온도가 달라지게 만드는 것을 제시한다.

다시 말하면, 광장 바닥에 계절에 따라 난방 및 냉방이 되는 장치를 설치하는 것을 말한다. 여름철에는 광장 바닥은 물론이고 벤치와 조각물이 매우 시원하여 이곳을 찾는 사람들은 편안하게 광장 바닥에 눕거나 쉴 수 있으며, 겨울철에는 벤치와 조각물이 매우 따뜻하여 친구를 기다리는데 별로 큰 지루함을 느끼지 않을 수 있다.

더욱이 잘 곳이 마땅치 않은 도시 부랑자들에겐 더없이 좋은 장소로서 작용하게 된다.

만약, 이 광장이 조성되었음에도 불구하고 이 광장에서 자리싸움이 발생한다면, 평화란 앞으로도 인간에게 기대할 수 없는 것으로 간주하여, 개인의 이상으로써만 존재하는 것으로 사회적 합의를 이루어야 한다.

贖罪の公園

世の中には、暴風雨に襲われることがなく、それゆえにその到来を待ち焦がれる人々がいます。

暴風雨が起こらない理由は特定の地理的な環境ではありません。そうではなく、ある地域において社会的・資本的システムが生み出す条件によって、少しずつ暴風雨が姿を消していったのです。

暴風雨の消滅はたしかに自然現象です。とはいえそれは、人為的に整えられた厳しい歴史のある場所で、より急速に進行するようです。ここで言う「人為的な歴史」という概念は、最低限の生活のあり方と資本主義の結果として拡大する階級との衝突のことです。この歴史は、社会の成員である人々の精神の中で、意識されない自然なエネルギーの流れとして作動します。

このような精神のありようは場所に影響を与えます。それによって、その場所は豊富な物資と多数の機関で溢れかえるようになります。それがまた人々の感情の状態に悪い影響を与え、まさにこの段階において、彼らは困難な過去の再来を待ち焦がれるようになるのです。

革命から危機へ、危機から革命へとつづく循環的な進展に似たこのプロセスは、神話に基づくことで可能になります。

ここで言う「神話」とは、資本主義へと投入されつづけるあの円形を指します。そして「暴風雨」とは、「何があっても暴風雨が繰り返される必要がある」という信奉それ自体が形づくる、循環的な構造のことです。

そこで、暴風雨の再来を待ち焦がれる人々のための空間が必要になってきます。

この空間は、誰にでも作ることができます。一人だけのための空間なので、あまり広さは要求されません。ポンプをきっちりと機能させるのに十分なエネルギーさえあれば大丈夫です。

この空間で生み出される暴風雨は本物ではありませんが、降りしきる雨の下で、利用者は涙を流しはじめるかもしれません。あるいは、水圧にもよりますが、自分の罪が洗い流されていると感じるかもしれません。

この公園をもっとも必要とするのは、一人あたりの収入が25,000ドル以上の国に住む人々でしょう。この25,000ドルという平均年収の数字は、たとえば、地域の人口の少なくとも三分の二が遵法精神を持つ人々で占められること、そして同じく少なくとも三分の二が貧困層を助ける人々で占められることを意味します。

国内総所得が1,000ドル以下の国々においても、この空間の設置は、別の形で人々を援助することになるでしょう。

勝利の広場

この広場が設置できるのは、地域の人々のうち三分の二以上が自分自身に満足している場所に限られています。「勝利」とは、個々人が自分に勝つかどうかに懸かっているからです。

そうした個人的な勝利を、ナルシシズムやエゴイズムと同一視するのは危険です。個人的な満足が本当に意味するところは、すすんで自身を犠牲にすることにほかならないのですから。自己犠牲が為されるのは、集団として発展すること、あるいは集団的な信念が社会全体を変革できると強く信じるからこそなのです。国家は人々に、「発展が進むことで、やがて自然と個人的な満足がもたらされる」という考えを信じ込ませようとします。それが成功するときにこそ、勝利は始まるのだと言えるでしょう。

このスペースを構築するには、約10万平方メートルほどの空き地が必要になります。

まず広場の真ん中に五つの点を打ちます。参加者はそのひとつを選び、そこをスタート地点として他の点へと移動していきます。この動きによって、星の形が浮かび上がるわけです。

調合された溶液を垂らしながら歩くことで、この動きの軌跡が地面に残されます。

最適なのは、エポキシ樹脂をベースとした耐久性のある塗料です。使用する色については自由ですが、お勧めは赤と青です。

歩くペースはあまり問題ではありません。が、できるだけ速く歩くことで、より確固とした決意が育まれることになります。五つの点を巡り終わったら、塗料を乾燥させるために、しばらくの間は動きを止めましょう。乾燥する前に踏まれるとかなり厄介な状況になるので、意味もなくウロウロしてはいけません。

塗料が乾燥したら、また同じ行為を繰り返します。

実行者はひとりでもかまいませんが、多ければ多いほど、より多様な星の形が浮かび上がることになります。

広場が完成するのは、この行為が約1万8千回繰り返されたときです。広場が仕上がったとき、私たちの過去はその栄光を讃えられたことになり、そして私たちは、明るい未来の歌を口ずさみながら、自信を深めるのです。

自由の広場

「自由」とは抽象的な言葉なので、広場をそのように名付けることは難しいはずです。でも奇妙なことに、世界の多くの国々では、ある種の象徴性を持つ空間にこの名前が使われています。

しかし少なくとも、そうした「自由の広場」が、歴史を何らかの形で反映しないように気をつけなければなりません。反映してしまう場合でも、外国人としての視点を基本に据えて、はっきりとした政治的な意図が立ち上がらないようにするべきです。そして、そのようなスポットを設置する場所としては、人口のうち三分の二以上が「自分たちは十分に自由だ」と感じている地域（国）だけを対象にするべきです。

まずは、高い建物に囲まれた、質の高い平坦な空間が必要になります。

いつも過去の出来事に苛まされている人々、現在の問題を未来に押し付けることで未来と現在をごちゃ混ぜにする人々、過去よりもみすぼらしい未来が来ることを不安に思う人々。このような人々が、それらの建物の屋上まで上ることになります。

屋上に着いたら、塗料の詰まった風船を手に取ります。塗料の色は赤で統一されます。色がバラバラだとおかしな結果になる可能性があるので、はじめから単色にこだわるのが最適なのです。

屋上に着いたら、見下ろして、狙いを定めて風船を落としてください。風船は地面に当たって破裂し、色が広がります。不安に襲われていた人々は安らぎを感じるでしょう。一方で、いたずら好きな人々は言葉を失い、疑い深い人々は爆笑するでしょう。そして、幸福感に満たされていた人々は幸福感の代わりに懸念を周囲に広げるでしょう。こうして、すべてが平等になるのです。

もしもこうした感情をひとつも持ち合わせていない人々が立ち寄ったら、そのときは言い争いが起こるでしょう。

孤独の塔

他者との出会いに向かう道が開けたとき、孤独は始まります。

例えば、愛する人を失ったり、暴力的な場面を目にしたり、あるいは日々の単調さにふと気づいたりして、言葉にできない苦痛や行き場のない状況に苛まされるとき、孤独は始まります。

誰かと疎遠になると、人は痛みを感じます。その痛みと結びついたものこそが孤独であると多くの人は考えますが、でも本当は、ひとりでいることの寂しさは他者の苦しみにこそ関係しているのです。他者に向けて心を開き、彼らのためにその苦しみを引き受けるとき、はじめて孤独は訪れるのです。

そんなわけで、他者に出会うこと、そして同時に孤独についてじっくり考えることができる空間として、塔の建造を提案します。場所としては人里離れた山奥が最適ですが、人々が足を運びやすいように、街中に設置することもありえます。

地下５階、地上15階のビルを建造し、ひとり用のエレベーターをそこに組み込むことになります。

地上の各階は景色を楽しめるように全面的なガラス張りで建てられますが、地下の各階はコンクリートで作られます。エレベーターの中は広々としているものの、ソファや椅子など、座席を置くスペースはありません。それは、体を休ませるのではなく、心の持ちようを変えるための空間なのです。

この塔は観光施設でも宗教的な瞑想の空間でもありませんが、利用にあたってはいくつかの規定があります。

この塔にぴったりの利用者は、他者と対面することを恐れる人々、あるいは見慣れない状況に身を縮ませる人々ですが、そのような人々はこんな場所を自分から探し求めたりしない可能性が高いでしょう。

エレベーターに誰も乗っていないときも、無人のままで運転されていること自体が孤独の象徴として機能することになるはずです。

出会いの広場

この広場は、他の人々と出会うことに恐怖を感じる、あるいは他者と出会うことについて悲観的な考えを持つ人々を対象とした、社会的な空間として意図されています。

この広場にはあまり費用はかからないので、まずは地域の人々から承認を得ることが重要です。同意を得たら、続いて、今にも崩れ落ちそうな５階以上の古いビルを買い上げます。都市部では老朽化したビルは解体するのが通例ですが、それにならって、このビルも業者に解体してもらいます。

解体のあとに残された瓦礫から、突き出たパイプ、割れたガラス、尖ったコンクリートの破片など、危険な部位を取り除いたり砕いたりします。

鋭い破片を片付けたら、足が落ちてしまいそうなサイズの穴や開口部をみつけて、コンクリートで覆っていきます。

すべての穴がコンクリートで埋められて、そのような処理を受けたパーツと崩れたままの瓦礫だけが残されたとき、広場は完成します。

ビルは巨大な彫刻のように見えるかもしれません。でも、通りがかって一番高いところに登った人にとっては、丘のようにも感じられるでしょう。バランスを取るためにポーズを整える人々を見ると、自然と話しかけたくなります。「地形のせいでポーズが妙になってしまいますね」などと言いながら。こうして、広場の形状は、対話を始めるための口実として使われるのです。

どうしても誰かと顔を見合わせる状況にあるので、気が楽になります。そして、相手の話すこと、身のこなし、そして気遣いを通じて、ついに真の出会いが訪れます。

この広場では、誰もが普段の生活ではなかなか見られない奇妙なポーズを取ることになるわけですが、それは見物人に対しても新しい景色となって現れるでしょう。

戦争、テロリズム、地震といった大惨事による痛ましい記憶が根深い場所は、この広場の立地としてふさわしくありません。そのような傷ついた地域には、そもそも、このような広場を設置しようと考えるべきではないのです。名前を変える必要が出てきますし、何よりも、大惨事の傷は決して消えることなく、さまざまな形で記憶の中に居座り続けるものですから。

倫理の塔

「倫理の塔」を建てるには、何よりもまず、社会全体から適切な同意を取りつけなければなりません。

塔の設置について広く社会的な同意を得ることに成功できるのは、少なくとも、人権について進歩的な観念を持った場所だけでしょう。そこは、社会的な寓意に溢れた場所に違いありません。

宗教が強い影響力を保ち、倫理的な振る舞いよりも信仰がより強く機能する場所（国）、あるいは慈善精神が発達しており、人口の半分が貧しい国々の子供たちにお金を寄付するような場所（国）において、この塔が建てられることはまずありえません。

この塔は単なる彫刻ではなく、人々はその中に入り、先端まで登ることができます。とはいえ、誰でも入場できるわけではありません。まずは厳格な条件に合致する必要があります。

基準を適用する対象となるのは、以下に挙げるような人々です。

生まれた日から貧困の中にあり、毎日の食事に苦労してギリギリの暮らしをする路上生活者たち。破産によって生活を破壊され、絶望に生きる浮浪者たち。

都市における自分の生活と鳩の暮らしを比べて、より充実した後者を羨む貧民たち。手に入れた時間があまりにも膨大で、途方に暮れるアーティストたち。炊き出しを求めて行列することが日課の、烙印を押された高齢者たち。生計を立てるため、親元を離れて暮らすティーンエイジャーたち。希望を抱いてこの地を踏んだのに、その希望と故郷に戻るという切望しか心の拠り所がない外国人たち。一年間ずっと誰とも会話を交わしていない、社交性を失った薬物中毒者たち。

つまり、経済的に破滅し、あるいは社会から拒絶され、この塔に登ることの他に何もやることがない人だけが、入口にあるフロントデスクで申し込むことができるのです。その際、社会的な地位や経済的な問題など、自分の情報を提出しなければなりません。

この手順に合格した人々には、塔の先端に着いたら一時間そこに立ち続けるという過酷な条件のもと、まず３万ウォン（30ドル）が支払われます。

厳しい境遇にあるからというだけで個人の体が公共の場で晒されるわけですが、あまりにも酷くて恐ろしいイメージとして、それは地域の人々に衝撃を与えるかもしれません。その一方で、観光客や訪問者は、生きた彫刻として、あるいは少なくともカメラを向ける価値があるものとしてそれを捉え、駆け寄ってスナップ写真を撮るでしょう。

お金がなくて訪れる人々からお金を作りたくて訪れる人々まで、さまざまな人々が利用を求めます。だからこの塔は、涙と失望、怒りと苦難が吹き荒れる場となって、さまざまな個性や権利のあり方に直面することになるでしょう。

この塔が実現すれば、人類愛を持つ人々は、貧しい人々を助ける社会的な機関の構築を目指して動くでしょう。社会的な地位の高い聡明な人々は、経済的な政策を通じて問題を解決しようとするでしょう。優しい心を持つ人々は、胸を痛ませて祈るでしょう。愚かな人々は、いつのまにか自身の幸せな生活に感謝するようになるでしょう。それ以外のほとんどの人々は、人間が生きる状況について、深く考えざるを得なくなるでしょう。

たとえこの塔が実現しなくても、それに登ってみたいと考える種類の人々は、いずれにせよ、やがてそのような状況に身を置くことになるはずです。

栄光への道

世の中には、栄光の瞬間が訪れるのを待ちきれない人々や、かつて成し遂げたことの輝きにしかゾクゾクしない人々がいます。

栄光において、重要なのは態度です。通常の場合、栄光は、抽象的な思考を通じた純粋化によって生じます。あるいは、集団的な利益のために目標を達成した場合、栄光は自己破壊的なエネルギーを内に秘めたひとつの神話として立ち現れます。それは、部外者にとっては背筋が凍るような光景として現れたり、状況によっては、ひどく馬鹿らしいものとして受け取られたりします。

なぜなら栄光とは、多くの場合において、過去や現在の出来事についての、ギラギラと輝くイリュージョンでしかないからです。もしくは、多くの人々が、進歩に身を捧げることや、際限のない向上のために命を懸けることこそが栄光への道であると信じているからです。

それでもなお、ここでは、メタファーをいくらか混ぜ合わせることで、具体的な形で栄光への道を示したいと思います。

まずは都市の打ち捨てられた地域で、一直線の道を選びます。それに面したビルの表面をすべて白く塗り、まるで空間そのものが浮遊しているような、魅力的な効果を作り出します。

それらのビルの外壁あるいは屋上に、スタジアムで使われるような強力な投光器を、地上から６メートルの高さになるように取り付けます。10平方メートルの領域ごとに、１万ワット相当の明るさで照らさなければなりません。そのためには、1000ワットの照明が10台、１メートル間隔で設置される必要があります。

通りの全体を照らすには、相当な電力を消費することになります。しかし、その場所（国）に住む人々の同意を取りつけること自体は楽観視されています。偉大な栄光に到達するためなのですから。どんなに豊かな地域（国）に設置された場合でも、一日に一度、日が暮れてから約１時間の間は照明をオンにすることが推奨されます。

これは、エネルギーの節約というだけでなく、より劇的な効果を生み出すための正しい方法なのです。

この通りが完成すると、生き生きとした都市の光景は捨て去られます。日常はもはや手の届かない場所にある、という考え方そのものが日常的な概念となって、弁証法的な視点へと折り込まれていくのです。

そこでは、終わりなく続く珍妙なパレードや壮大なモニュメント、あるいは展覧会や美術館がもたらすような、目を眩ませるイリュージョンと同じ効果が生み出されます。それによって、栄光を迎えることへの希望がもたらされるのです。非現実的で夢幻的な環境の中、眩い路上で、歩行者たちは互いと顔を合わせることになります。

平和の広場

もしも「平和」の意味するところが衝突や敵対性の不在なのだとしたら、そのひとつのあり方として、まず気楽さを挙げなければなりません。それは進歩として知られる理想の端をより柔らかくしてくれるでしょう。

感情だけでは共同体をうまく機能させることはできない、という広く共有された考えに基づいて、ますます専門的に特化された、完璧なシステムが作られています。しかし、それがいかに高度なシステムであっても、そこには常に、失望や怒りへと向かう衝動があるのです。そのような衝動を無視しないという態度が示されている場所は、それだけで、かなり民主的で進歩的な社会であると考えられます。

衝突の原因となるのは、宗教、イデオロギー、人種、領土といった、人類と同じくらい長い歴史を持つ多くの問題です。しかし、それらが排除されれば自動的に平和がもたらされるかと言えば、そんな単純な話ではありません。排除が完全完璧に宣言された瞬間に、どこかの誰かが泣き始めるでしょうから。

時には誰かに平和な気持ちをもたらすにあたって、些細な物事への関心や配慮は、大きな問題における妥協と少なくとも同程度には、寛大なジェスチャーになりえるのです。

「平和の広場」を構成する視覚的あるいは空間的なすべての要素が目指すのは、訪れる人々に政治的な影響を与えることではありません。このことを明確に示し、このような考えを弱める（もっと正確に言えば、このような伝統的な観念を壊す）ために、複数のベンチとひとつの彫刻作品を巨大な空き地に設置します。

つまりほとんど何もないわけですが、とはいえ彫刻はどうしても必要です。公共の仕事であるかぎり、その街の行政は、税金が納税者本人のために使われたという視覚的な証明を求めるものだからです。

そうであっても、空っぽの空間だけで平和の感覚を呼び起こすことは、慣れない人々に対しては難しすぎるかもしれません。

そうした潜在的な困難を軽減するために、厳密で精緻な科学技術に基づいて、季節によってベンチと彫刻の表面温度が変動するようにします。

つまり、季節によって、広場の底部を冷やしたり暖めたりする装置が設置されることになります。夏は地面およびベンチと彫刻が冷やされるので、人々はリラックスして寝転がるでしょう。冬はそれらが暖められるので、寒い中で友達を待つことはもはや苦痛ではなくなります。

付け加えると、この広場は、路上生活者にとっては完璧な寝床として機能するかもしれません。都市でそのような場所を見つけることは難しいですから。

この広場が作られてもなお、場所取りなどをめぐって争いが起こるとすれば、もはや、人々は平和が実現する可能性を信じられなくなるでしょう。そして、「平和を見つけるには、それぞれが自分の理想と共に生きるしかない」という社会的な合意に至ることになるでしょう。
