Styrofoam is a supplementary material similar to plastic bags, cardboard boxes, paper bags, and packaging tapes. We use these materials when we temporarily carry or store certain things. For example, Styrofoam is used to prevent the damage of products or used as insulation for buildings. While the roles and functions of such materials are supplementary, they are independent and subjective. In the meantime, although they are objects and goods with their own agency, we assume they are “temporary” when we use them because they are born with such purposes.As an architectural material, Styrofoam panels usually have the function of heat and sound insulation. Since they are mostly installed between walls, we cannot see them in the finished buildings. While invisible to us, we can understand the importance of the material in terms of its function.
During the construction of buildings, Styrofoam panels are cut and carved according to the measures on architectural blueprints. The remaining pieces of Styrofoam panels are in irregular shapes and not needed anymore. In shapes that are unidentical to each other, they look invisibly insignificant to some people while others see them with a sense of curiosity.
If someone is intrigued by the shapes of cut-out pieces of Styrofoam panels, it might be that the person has a unique sense of beauty. We can imagine two forms of Styrofoam: One that is carved out as a sculpture by an artist and the other is cut out according to its function. We cannot merely assert that the former is more beautiful since it is created with aesthetic goals. If the shape of the former shall become more beautiful than that of the latter, we have to present valid logic that proves the argument. However, we already know that it is not only impossible but also futile to do so. Thus, we can surely assume that Styrofoam pieces that have been cut and broken during the construction of buildings can become aesthetic objects. The cut-out Styrofoam pieces possess different politics than leather pieces or paper sheets that are cut to make shoes and masks. Although all of them are cut in one way or another, we perceive Styrofoam with a different perspective in terms of its material politics. Compared to paper or leather, Styrofoam is way more heartless, cold, desolate, and inhuman with regards to where it came from. And we consider the material truly insignificant. We might be interested in the leftover Styrofoam pieces if they are replaced with leather in identical shapes. If Styrofoam is confident as a material, wouldn’t it be when it sits on top of the shelf at a hardware store? Although product makers and construction workers look at Styrofoam panels with their eyes full of love and adoration, the material is totally forgotten once it is placed in the walls. Such is the feeble fate of Styrofoam as a material.
I propose Styrofoam, a material that is lightweight, vulnerable to damages, impermanent when it comes to preservation, and has soft surfaces. Though it is roughly cut and damaged in an unrecoverable condition, I propose it as an artwork. Since the idea of the artistic form is a consensual perception that has been built by humans over a long time, it might be difficult to acknowledge Styrofoam figures in careless shapes as artworks. In addition, the concepts of completeness and incompleteness are also conceived under the same context as that of the artistic form. Hence, the Styrofoam sculptures that are made by connecting broken Styrofoam pieces might be perceived as precarious, incomplete materials. And yet,
we know that we have the capacity to discover beauty from
unfinished forms and incomplete materials. We know that we are even capable of feeling romantic sentiments out of abstract forms and understand logic through metaphors. Although these artworks look clumsy and broken on the outside, they know they are beautiful by themselves. And we know how fun it is to observe the paradoxical language hidden in the artworks. In the end, the perceptual consensus of humans might be a mere promise among those who are lazy and impractically busy.
“This work is irregular, incomplete, intimate, and voluntary. The work declines to pursue a state of completeness, to entail logical validity to induce sympathy, and to offer a common idea to convince the majority. The work continues to defy any definition set by a collective and instead, values incompleteness. There is no place for long-standing hierarchical systems or ideas based on collective decision or agreement in this work. Therefore, the work is devoid of a collective agreement and consists only that of an individual’s voluntary expressions.
This work is at the antipode of the long-standing traditions of collectively constructed agreements, concepts, faiths, or ideologies. The work is like a small store with no particular raison d'être; trivial conversation; an unsummarizable subject; a complex thought that cannot be defined in a sentence; a very long song with no specific score that is engraved in the mind of the people wherein everyone could sing along; a company with a top and a bottom but no hierarchy; a military armed with shovels and hammers where order is delivered in songs; a compliment made without empty rhetoric; and a poem where letters appear like drawings. When the 21st century humanity is engrossed in the idea of immorality, happiness, and sacredness, this work seeks joy from what is not immortal, happiness, or sacred. ”
︎︎︎불완전에 가까운 완전한 완성
스티로폼이라는 재료는 비닐봉지, 골판지 상자, 종이 봉투, 포장 테이프등과 같이 보조적 재료이다. 비닐봉지, 골판지 상자, 종이 봉투와 같은 재료들은 물건을 임시적으로 담거나 보관할 때 사용된다. 스티로폼은 상품의 파손을 막아주는 역할을 하거나 건물의 벽면에 매입되어 보온의 역할을 한다. 이와 같은 재료들의 역할과 용도는 보조적이지만 존재 자체는 독립적이고 주체적이다. 이 재료들이 주체적인 사물이자 소비재임에도 불구하고 우리는 이 재료들을 사용할 때 ‘임시적’이라는 전제를 둔다. 왜냐하면 이 재료는 그런 목적으로 태어났기 때문이다.스티로폼 판재는 건축재로 보통 건물의 보온과 방음을 목적으로 한다. 스티로폼 판재의 경우, 주로 건축물의 벽과 벽 사이에 위치하기 때문에 실제 공간에서는 스티로폼 판재 그 자체를 볼 수 없다. 우리의 눈에 띄지는 않지만 기능의 목적으로 보자면 그 존재의 중요성을 알 수 있다.
스티로폼 판재는 도면의 치수에 의해 공사과정에서 절단된다. 절단되어 필요가 사라진 스티로폼 판재들의 형태는 일정하지 않다. 각기 다른 형태의 조각들은 보는 이에 따라 눈에 띄지 않을 정도로 하찮아 보이기도 하고 어떤 이에게는 흥미롭게 보이기도 한다. 만약 어떤 이가 잘려나간 판재조각의 모양에 대해 흥미를 느낀다면 미적 감각이 남다른 사람이라고 봐도 좋을 것이다. 우리는 미술가에 의해 조각된 스티로폼과 기능적 목적에 의해 잘려나간 스티로폼, 두 가지의 형태를 상상해 볼 수 있다. 전자가 미적 목적을 위한 것이어서 더 아름답고 후자는 그렇지 않다고 우리는 단언할 수 없다. 후자의 형태보다 전자의 경우가 더 아름다워지려면 그것을 증명할 타당한 논리를 제시해야 한다. 그러나 우리는 그것이 불가능할 뿐더러 부질없음을 알고 있다. 따라서 공사 과정에서 잘려나가고 부서진 스티로폼 조각도 미적 대상이 될 수 있다고 충분히 가정할 수 있다. 잘려나간 스티로폼은 신발을 제작하기 위해 잘려진 가죽이나 가면을 만들기 위해 잘려 나간 종이와는 다른 정치성을 갖고 있다. 잘려 나간 상황은 동일하지만 재료라는 정치성으로 인해 우리는 다른 관점에서 스티로폼이라는 재료를 대한다. 스티로폼은 그 태생으로 인해 종이나 가죽에 비해 훨씬 비정하고 차갑고 처량하고 비인간적이다. 그리고 우리는 스티로폼을 진심으로 하찮게 여긴다. 잘려나간 스티로폼의 형태를 그대로 두고 재료만 가죽으로 바꾼다면 우리는 그것에 관심을 보일지 모를 일이다. 만약 스티로폼이 재료로써 당당하다면 아마도 철물점(hardware store) 선반 위에 있을 때만이 아닐까? 제작업자나 시공업자의 아낌없는 사랑의 눈길도 공사 후 벽 안으로 갇히고 나면 잊혀 질 이 재료는 이렇게 나약한 운명을 가지고 있다.
나는 가볍고, 파손되기 쉬우며, 보존이 영구적이지 못하며, 표면이 연한 스티로폼을 미술작품으로 제안한다. 형태는 대충 잘려지고, 다시 회복할 수 없도록 부서진 상태이지만 이것을 미술작품으로 제안한다. 미술적 형태라는 관념은 오랜 기간 동안 인간이 만들어 낸 합의된 인식이기 때문에 엉성한 형태의 스티로폼이 미술작품으로는 인정되기는 어려울지도 모른다. 또한 완전함과 불완전함이라는 인식도 같은 맥락에 있기 때문에 부서진 조각을 이어 붙여 만든 스티로폼 조각은 불안한 미완성의 물질로 인식될 지도 모른다. 그러나 우리는 미완성의 형태와 불완전한 재료로부터 아름다움을 찾아 낼 수 있는 능력이 있음을 알고 있다. 심지어 추상적 형태로부터도 낭만적 정서를 느끼고 은유로서 논리를 이해할 수도 있음을 알고 있다. 이 작품은 겉으로는 엉성하고 부서져 있지만 자신이 아름답다는 것을 스스로 알고 있다. 그리고 우리는 이 작품에 감춰진 모순의 언어가 얼마나 재미있는지도 알고 있다. 결국 인간이 만들어낸 인식의 합의란 게으르고 쓸데없이 바쁘기만 한 사람들의 약속일지도 모른다.
“이 작품은 불규칙적이고 미완성이며 개인적이고 임의적이다. 이 작품은 완전함을 추구해야 한다던가, 공감을 불러 일으키기 위해 타당한 논리성이 내포되어야 하거나, 다수를 설득할 수 있는 공통의 개념이 있어야 한다는 것을 거부한다. 이 작품은 집단에 의한 정의를 거부하며 불완전성에 대한 찬미로 가득하다. 또한 오랜 동안 우리가 집단적으로 형성한 체계나 집단의 동의 하에 이루어 낸 개념은 이 작품에 존재하지 않는다. 그래서 이 작품은 집단적 합의에 의한 것은 없고, 개인에 의한 자의적 표현만 있다. 이 작품은 집단적으로 합의를 이룬 것, 집단에 의해 구축된 개념, 긴 역사를 통해 이루어진 집단적 신념이나 이념 등과 같은 것들의 대척점에 있다. 이 작품은 구멍가게 같이 존재의 목적이 명확하지 않은 것, 실없는 대화, 요약할 수 없는 주제, 한 마디로 정의할 수 없는 복잡한 생각, 악보가 존재한 적이 없으나 언제나 기억이 떠올라 같이 부를 수 있는 아주 긴 노래, 위 아래는 있으나 서열이 없는 회사, 삽과 망치로 무장하고 노래로 명령하는 군대, 수식어 없이 표현하는 칭찬, 글자가 그림처럼 보이는 시(詩)와 같은 것이다.
21세기의 인류가 불멸, 행복, 신성과 같은 것을 몰두할 때, 이 작품은 불멸이 아닌 것, 행복이 아닌 것, 신성이 아닌 것에서 기쁨을 찾는다.”
