John F. Kennedy’s public speech given in West Berlin in 1963 criticizing East Germany’s communism that divided the nation is well known for the phrase “I am a citizen of Berlin (Ich bin ein Berliner)” as a person who supports liberalism. This video features an elementary school student in Gwangju, Korea who learned oratory skills especially aimed for instigating patriotism – this student mimics Kennedy’s speech with a translated version in Korean. The original speech transfers to some strange situation through the process of imitation, translation, de-contextualization of time and space, and exaggerated gestures of the child who does not understand the meaning of the speech. The artist reproaches himself that involving this child in the performance was unethical although it was agreed by the parents and payment was offered. The original text is shown separately in another monitor because it is not a production by the artist.
1963년 베를린을 방문한 미국의 케네디 대통령은 분단상황을 야기한 동독공산주의를 비판하면서 자유주의를 신봉하는 자신도 베를린 시민이라는 취지의 연설을 한 것으로 유명하다. 이 비디오는 애국심을 고취하는데 적절한 웅변기법을 배운 광주의 한 초등학생이 한국어 번역문으로 연설을 흉내 내는 광경을 담았다. 본래의 연설은 모방과 번역, 시공간의 탈맥락화, 그리고 원문의 의미를 채 파악하지 못한 어린이의 과장법을 통해 이상한 지점으로 이행한다. 부모의 동의와 사례 지급에도 불구하고 작가는 어린이를 이 퍼포먼스에 참여시킨 것이 비윤리적인 행위였다고 자책한다. 원문은 작가의 창작물이 아니기에 별도의 모니터에 게재한다.
