Humans attempt to achieve their goals through planning. Sometimes, the goals are grand and set in the distant future, other times, they are small and mundane goals such as finishing homework and shopping for groceries. All activities in our lives are physical efforts that attempt to achieve the various goals that we set for ourselves.When we believe we have achieved our goals, we cherish the process along the way. For those who present proposals at work, it’s their collected data and research. For those who make clothes, fabric and needles would be their invaluable tools.
On the other hand, these items once cherished often go abandoned after they have fulfilled their function. The items and materials used in the process lose their purpose once the intended goal has been achieved. Despite being abandoned and discarded out of sight, however, the materials and tools can become remarkably subjective. To be abandoned means they no longer function as tools or a means to an end where the goals of the users are prioritized. Therefore, materials and objects that function as tools are secondary and not subjective. When they no longer function as tools, however, they are subjective. This is an obvious fact.
This work displays an arrangement of items that were used to achieve and serve people’s intended goals. The “used objects” in this work are not subjective beings that embody the goal itself, but represent secondary objects (items) that served the subject (and their intended goal).
I obtained these plastic bags filled with all kinds of items from different people. People no longer needed them, or they didn’t need them at this point in time and so gladly handed them over to me. The People who gave me these objects are students at the university where I teach, my family members, and friends. Their objects were placed in plastic bags or envelopes, and the average number of items in each bag is around thirty. Each bag is intended for a single, common goal. The combinations of objects can be categorized according
to similar concepts, but in some cases, the objects are conceptually in conflict with one another. The objects come as metaphors to me, and they reflect the thoughts of the person who collected them. I unfold stories by looking at the objects those that are worthless, strange, ordinary, and simply amusing.
︎︎︎규정할 수 없는 규칙
인간은 계획을 통해 목적한 바를 이루고자 노력한다. 목적으로 삼은 것이 원대하거나 먼 미래의 일을 염두에 둔 것도 있지만 숙제를 마치거나 장보는 것과 같은 일상의 작은 목적도 있다. 우리의 삶에서 활동이란 어떤 임의의 목적을 세우고 계획을 한 후 이를 성취하고자 하는 물리적 노력이다.우리는 목적한 바를 이루었다고 여길 때 그 과정을 소중하게 여긴다. 회사에서 기획 안을 발표한 이는 준비하던 과정에서 수집된 여러 종류의 자료가 소중할 것이고, 옷 한벌을 완성한 이는 옷을 만들기 위해 사용했던 옷감과 바늘과 같은 도구가 매우 소중할 것이다.
이렇게 소중했던 물건들은 목적한 바가 이루고 나면 소외되거나 외면 받기도 한다. 목적한 바를 이루었기 때문에 사용되었던 도구들과 재료들은 필요의 목적이 상실되기 때문이다. 버려졌거나 잠시 관심의 영역에서 사라진 그 재료와 도구는 그럼에도 불구하고 매우 주체적이다. 사용자의 관심에서 사라졌다는 것은 사용자가 설정한 목적이 가장 상위의 개념이며 목적을 이루기 위해 필요한 재료는 목적을 위한 도구로 여겨졌기 때문이다. 그래서 도구화된 재료와 물건들은 그 조건에서는 부차적이지 주체적이기 못하다. 그러나 재료와 물건들이 도구화되지 않을 때, 이 재료와 물건들은 주체적이다. 이것은 자명한 일이다.
이 작품은 사람들이 무언가 목적한 바를 성취하기 위해 필요했거나 사용했던 물건들을 나열하여 보여준다. 이 작품에서 ‘사용했던 물건들’이란 목적한 바의 결과로 나타난 주체적 대상으로써의 사물이 아니라 그 주체(목적한 것)를 보조했던 부수적 대상(사물)을 말한다.
나는 여러 사람들로부터 여러 종류의 물건들이 들어 있는 비닐 봉지를 얻었다. 그들은 더 이상 필요하지 않아서 내게 제공했거나 여전히 필요하지만 지금은 필요치 않아 내게 호쾌히 건네 준 것이다. 내게 자신의 물건을 제공한 사람들은 내가 근무하는 대학의 대학생들과 나의 가족 그리고 지인들이다. 그들로부터 받은 물건들은 비닐봉지나 봉투에 담겨 있었고 수량은 대략 30여개이다. 하나의 봉지에 수집된 물건들은 공통의 목적을 통해 모아진 것이다. 물건들의 조합은 비교적 비슷한 개념으로 분류할 수도 있지만 어떤 경우는 의외의 조합으로 개념적 충돌이 발생한다. 물건들은 내게 은유로써 다가오고 일시적으로 소외된 물건들은 수집한 사람의 생각을 대리한다. 이것만으로도 나는 별의 별 상념에 빠져 별 볼일 없는 것들, 기괴한 것들, 평범한 것들, 웃음이 나오는 것들을 바라보며 이야기를 시작한다.
