영국 시인 윌리엄 브레이크의 한 편의 시(詩)가 여러 단계의 번역 작업을 통해 원작의 의미가 변형되어 가는 과정을 보여주는 작품이다. 작가에 의해 선택된 ‘인간 추상(Human Abstract)’이라는 시는 먼저 한국어로 번역되었고, 그 후 번역된 한국어는 순차적으로 다른 나라의 언어로 번역 과정을 거쳤다. 번역 작업의 끝은 원작의 언어인 영어로 마감되었고, 누구나 추측하듯이 원작인 인간 추상과는 판이하게 다르게 작문되었다. 이 번역 작업은 매우 전문적인 번역가에 의해 완성되었고, 매 번역은 한화 육십 만원이 지급되었다.
This work suggests how the original text can be written differently by undergoing translation into other languages. For this project, the poem ‘Human Abstract’ adopted from an English poet William Blake is firstly translated into Korean then proceeds into the translation of other languages one after the other. The last translation was in English and it became entirely different from the original.
