This video is a record of Gimhongsok’s acquaintance lecturing with the artist’s lecture notes on “appropriation” and “translation” in place of him. This substitute lecturer explains that an images of famous art work by a internationally acclaimed artist that we can see only through a printed version in a catalogue is a result of numerous stages and processes of transformation of media, replication and translation; nevertheless it can still stand as another original work independent from its source. Likewise, this video becomes an independent text, an original work by Gimhongsok. The English version of this video is another independent work based on an English text translated from the lecture given in Korean by the lecturer.
이 비디오는 ‘차용’과 ‘번역’에 관한 김홍석의 강의록을 작가의 지인이 대신 강의하는 모습을 기록한 것이다. 대리 강사는 카탈로그에서나 볼 수 있는 해외 유명 작품들이 우리의 눈에 이미지로서 들어 오기까지 거치는 수많은 단계의 매체 변화와 복제, 번역의 과정을 설명하는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 결과물이 하나의 독립된 원본으로 자리할 수 있음을 주장한다. 이 영상 역시 하나의 독립된 텍스트로서 김홍석의 원작이 된다. 영문 영상은 강사의 한국어 설명을 영어로 번역한 후 독립된 비디오 작품으로 완성한 것이다.
