Title of Project: Absent Acts
This project reveals people's actions and their results. Here, this refers to acts such as breathing into a balloon, or mopping with hands. In blowing up a balloon, one’s breath is stored into the space, and that balloon can be symbolized as a person. The blown up balloon remains as a result of the act of breathing in, and the invisible breath becomes visualized through the balloon. Mopping is the act of wiping out impurities or dust on the surface of a specific space or object. In observing a subject mopping, we can see that the act is determined from a very subjective point of view, and the direction, order and strength is determined by each individual. In this way, mopping symbolizes an individual’s movement. Breathing in and mopping are different from acts such as writing, cooking, throwing stones, or moving a computer mouse. It is because these are not acts of value or survival. We may refer to these acts as 'a temporary reaction to need'. Through this project, Gimhongsok reveals the trivial and non-special, acts difficult to imbue meaning. It is because such acts may be important in a specific moment. Perhaps these non-special and non-essential acts that are difficult to imbue meaning held significant value long ago. Or on the contrary, perhaps they will be of great value in the future.
Untitled (short people)
This series collects and arranges the balloons blown up by my acquaintances. Acquaintances here refer to my family, the workers of a foundry that I have worked with for a long time, my friends, and my students. They each picked the color of the balloon according to their preferences and breathed into the balloon according to their ability and mood. It must be intriguing to be able to physically feel one’s own breath. But I cannot say that their breath represents their lives as a whole. It is just a piece of breath, and much too painful to symbolize people with a wrinkled balloon. The fact that I met them, and the place in which they conscientiously breathed into the balloon is much more interesting and significant.
In order to materialize this work, I met with groups of mostly 4 to 6 people. When I stacked the balloons together, it was around 1 to 1.4 meters high. The title ‘short people’ was created for this reason.

Title of Project: 행위 없음
이 프로젝트는 사람들의 행위와 그 결과를 보여준다. 여기서 행위란 풍선에 바람을 불어 넣는 일과 손으로 걸레질을 하는 것을 말한다. 풍선에 바람을 불어 넣는 일은 한 사람의 호흡이 풍선이라는 공간에 저장되는 것을 의미하며, 그 풍선은 풍선을 분 사람으로 상징화 될 수 있다. 눈에 보이지 않는 숨은 풍선을 통해 시각화되며 부푼 풍선은 숨을 불어 넣는 행위의 결과로 남는다. 걸레질은 특정 공간이나 사물의 표면에 있는 불순물이나 먼지 등을 닦아 내는 일을 말한다. 걸레질을 하는 주체의 동작을 가만히 관찰해 보면 우리는 그 동작이 매우 주관적인 관점에서 결정되어 방향, 순서, 강도 등이 그 개인에 의해 정해진다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 걸레질은 한 개인의 움직임을 상징화한다.
숨과 걸레질과 같은 행위는 글씨를 쓰거나, 요리를 하거나, 돌을 던지거나, 컴퓨터 마우스를 움직이는 것과 같은 행위와는 다르다. 이것은 가치나 생존을 위한 행위가 아니기 때문이다. 이러한 행위를 우리는 ‘필요에 위한 일시적 반응’라고 부를 수도 있겠다. 나는 이 프로젝트를 통해 사소하고 특별하지 않으며 의미를 부여하기 애매한 것을 드러내고자 한다. 이것은 어느 순간 매우 중요하기 때문이다. 사소하거나 특별하지 않고 의미를 부여하기 애매한 것의 대부분은 먼 옛날 아주 중요했던 가치였을 지 모른다. 반대로 다가올 미래에 아주 중요해 질 가치가 이런 것일지 모를 일이다.

이 작품은 나의 지인들에게 풍선을 제공하여 불어 준 풍선들을 수집하고 나열한 것이다. 여기서 나의 지인이란 나의 가족, 나와 오랜 동안 같이 작업한 주물공장의 노동자들, 내 친구들, 그리고 나의 학생들을 말한다. 이들은 각자의 취향에 따라 풍선의 색을 고르고, 각자의 능력과 기분에 따라 자신의 숨의 양을 풍선에 불어 넣었다. 그들의 숨을 잠시나마 물리적으로 느낄 수 있다는 것은 매우 신비로운 일임이 틀림없다. 그러나 나는 이들의 숨이 그들의 삶을 대변한다고는 말 할 수 없다. 그냥 숨의 한 조각이자 곧 숨이 빠져 나가 쭈그러진 풍선을 그들로 상징화하기에는 너무 애처롭기 때문이다. 내가 그들을 만났다는 사실과 그들이 성심껏 숨을 내쉬는 그 행위가 발생한 그 현장이 훨씬 흥미롭고 중요하다는 것은 분명하다.
이 작품을 실현하기 위해 내가 만나 본 사람들의 그룹은 대부분 4~6명이었으며 4~6개의 풍선을 세워보았자 대략 1m에서 1.4m이내의 높이를 띄게 되었다. ‘short people’이란 제목은 이런 이유에서 생겨났다.
